Travel the length of New Zealand enjoying the iconic landscapes and highlights of this wonderful country. With many 2 night stays, the relaxed pace of this tour allows you to experience each destination. The scenery will change as you travel from the North Island to the South Island.

Included in the tour is a cruise on Milford Sound and also a train journey on the TranzAlpine Scenic Railway, these are two of the must do activities in the South Island.

Overview

This is a private tour, with a maximum of 8 people, ideal for single travelers, couple’s or a family that want an escorted tour without the rigidity of a coach tour.

You will have a Professional driver with you throughout the tour, who will also be on hand for hotel check in and to offer a professional  service to enhance the experience.

This tour can include evening meals and entry into the activities mentioned, these can be added at time of booking.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Auckland, New Zealand

Arrive in Auckland, you will be met on arrival at the airport, by a private driver and transferred to your hotel.
Depending on your arrival time, maybe explore the City and its museums or take a harbour cruise with Lunch

Day 2
Auckland

This tour can be priced with meals and included excursions.
Today you can explore Auckland and enjoy its many sights, Your Professional Driver, will collect you from your hotel, showing you the city. Alternatively, you can use the Hop On – Hop Off bus that tours the city.

Included meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: 4* SkyCity Hotel. Optional Activities: Waiheke Island & Auckland City Hop on – Hop off tour.

Day 3
Auckland – Bay of Islands

The Journey today takes you to the Bay of Islands, it’s around 3.5 hours, but allow more time to stop and enjoy the scenery and small towns on route, including Puhoi and Whangarei, taking another break at Kawakawa – home to the World Famous, Hundertwasser toilets. Continue on to the central Bay of Islands, Paihia.

Day 4
Bay of Islands

Today, after breakfast, enjoy the town of Paihia or visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, it has Haka performances on at certain times during the day. Another tour, is one that takes you on a cruise to the Hole in the Rock, maybe see dolphins swimming in the area.

Day 5
Bay of Islands – Auckland

This morning, depart Bay of Islands and return to Auckland the scenic route. Journey through the small townships of Omapere and Opononi, then travel through the Waipoua Forest, continue through Puhoi before crossing the harbour bridge and arriving back in Auckland.

Included meals: Breakfast. Accommodation: 4* SkyCity Hotel (or similar). Optional Activities: Matakohe Kauri Museum.

Day 6
Auckland – Rotorua

Departing Auckland, drive south past the Bombay Hills and into the farmland and pastures of Waikato. If you’re interested in The Lord of the Rings, then a visit to Hobbiton is a must, this is the film set used in the film trilogies and is fully intact. After your visit continue to Rotorua.

Day 7
Rotorua

Today is a day of exploring Rotorua. Peppered with natural hot springs, boiling mud pools and steaming geysers, it sits within one of the world’s most active volcanic regions. Home to several Maori Tribes, a visit to one of the Maori Villages should be high on your list of things to do. To see New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, Rainbow Springs and the National Kiwi Hatchery is a must do activity, here you will see Kiwi birds on a guided tour. Other things that are available are flights over Rotorua and geo thermal reserves, or maybe a visit to a farm that is both interesting and fun for all.

Day 8
Rotorua – Wellington

After a night’s sleep, enjoy breakfast and then it’s time to say goodbye to Rotorua, we will enjoy fantastic scenery on our way to Wellington. Following the lakeshore south, past Turani and then ascend the central plateau onto the Rangipo Desert, before desending through the towns of Taihape and Mangawka. Following the coast through Paraparaumu, Paekakariki and Plimmerton and finally arriving in Wellington.
Maybe tonight take a tour of Zealandia, a conservation success and safe haven for many of New Zealand’s rarest native animals. Your guide will take you on a torch light walk through the native New Zealand bush.

Day 9
Wellington – Blenheim

Today we take the interisland ferry from Wellington to Picton on the South Island. Here head to Blenheim, only a 30 minute drive. After checking in at the hotel, its maybe time for lunch and the rest of the day is free. You may wish to join a Wine tour, you would be collected from the hotel and taken through 3 or 4 hand-picked wineries to taste the award winning wines of the area. You’ll also hear about the history of winemaking in Marlborough and the process each winery goes through.

Day 10
Blenheim – Kaikoura

We depart after breakfast and head to Kaikoura Township, a bustling little place with many cafes, restaurants and shops. But the main reason to visit here is the wildlife – it’s one of the only places in New Zealand you can see whale’s year round. You can experience the only marine based whale watching company. Whale watch Kaikoura offers a once-in-a-lifetime, up close encounter with the giant Sperm Whale.

Day 11
Kaikoura – Christchurch

This morning after breakfast we travel through the Waipara Valley and onto Christchurch. Maybe take a detour to Hanmer Springs for a relaxing dip in its thermal pools. On arrival in Christchurch, you may wish to take a tour of the City, either on board a Guided Coach Tour or the Hop-on – hop-off bus.

Day 12
Christchurch

Today is at leisure to enjoy Christchurch. Maybe travel outside Christchurch for further sightseeing.

Day 13
Christchurch – Mt Cook

Today you’ll drive through the heart of the South Island, crossing the Canterbury plains, taking a stop at Geraldine and then continuing through Fairlie to the town of Tekapo. During the day you will get views of Mt Cook (New Zealand’s tallest mountain) from the shores of Lake Pukaki, before arriving in Mt Cook Village.

Day 14
Mt Cook – Dunedin

We leave Mt Cook Village and head to Dunedin. You will pass Twizel, one of the Lord of the Rings locations and go through Omarama – Gliding capitol of New Zealand. As you arrive in Dunedin, take in the city’s Edwardian and Scottish heritage in the buildings in the city centre.

Day 15
Dunedin

Today you have time to explore Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin, Known as the Edinburgh of the South, has a heavy Scottish influence. There are many cafes and wine bars in The Octagon to explore, then continue on a walking tour of the Street art dotted around the city. Maybe drive to the coast to New Zealand’s only castle, Larnach Castle. On you way back, head to Otago Peninsula to see the largest mainland Albatross colony in the world.

Day 16
Dunedin – Te Anau

Today drive to Te Anau, taking you through classic farming scenery. Te Anau is a lakeside town and gateway to the Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. After checking into your hotel, why not take a cruise across the lake to the Glow-worm Caves.

Day 17
Te Anau - Milford Sound - Te Anau

Today is a full day tour to Milford Sound. The drive is full of scenery from the moment you depart Te Anau. During the journey to Milford sound, stretch your legs at Chasm Walk and then continue the journey through the Homer Tunnel to the Village of Milford. A 2 hour cruise of Milford Sound is included, as is a picnic lunch. As you cruise look out for the wildlife, such as dolphins, seals and penguins. After the cruise, once again take the road back to Te Anau and your hotel.

Day 18
Te Anau – Queenstown

Depart Te Anau and head to Queenstown, the adventure capitol of New Zealand. Check into your hotel and enjoy free time in this wonderful town.
This evening, why not take a cruise on board the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak for a gourmet BBQ dinner and farm tour.

Day 19
Queenstown

Today you can discover Queenstown and its surrounding area. Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu and beneath the soaring Remarkable Mountain Range. There is certainly a lot to do in the area, maybe take a wine tour down the Gibbston Valley, a Gondola Ride for fantastic views, historic Arrowtown or a Bungy Jump. Other tours that are well worth it are, Skippers Canyon and Jet Boat Ride and the Appellation Boutique Wine Tour.

Day 20
Queenstown – Franz Josef

From Queenstown, head to Wanaka, gateway to the Mt Aspiring National Park, after the town of Makarora, continue through the remote seaside settlement of Haast and onto the township of Franz Josef Glacier.

Day 21
Franz Josef

Today is left at leisure to enjoy this township at your own pace.
You can take a walk to the viewpoint of the glacier from the parking area just outside Franz Josef. However, to go on the Glacier itself you must take a licensed helicopter tour. Another way to relax, is in the Glacier Hot pools, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 40 degrees.

Day 22
Frans Josef – Greymouth

Today you will head North through the historic gold mining town of Hokitika. Dating back to the 1860’s, it’s known for its Greenstone (Pounamu). After visiting the town, continue the journey to Greymouth, here your driver will drop you off at the Greymouth Train Station where you will board the train to Christchurch.
The TranzAlpine scenic railway is considered one of the world’s great train journeys, travelling across the south island through Arthur’s Pass National Park. You will descend to the Canterbury Plains before arriving in the City of Christchurch, your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel.

Day 23
Depart Christchurch

After 23 days of exploring New Zealand’s North and South Islands, it’s time to bid farewell, taking with you many memories of this fantastic journey.
A private transfer has been arranged transferring you to Christchurch Airport in time for your departing flight.
